Nobody's running Lebanon, central bank boss says (Reuters)
While our attention is rightfully on Afghanistan, it’s important to spare some time to learn what’s happening in Lebanon.
The TL;DR - one year ago, Beirut was rocked with an explosion at its port, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. Rather than transparency and aid, the government has obstructed the investigation and immunity has protected the senior officials from answering questions openly.
Prime Minister Hassan Diab quit his post after the explosion, and a new government has yet to be formed (President Michel Aoun remains in charge).
Fuel subsidies have kept the country afloat with basic power for the past year, but it has been draining the country’s currency reserves. Riad Salameh, the central bank governor, moved to halt these subsidies to pause the financial meltdown.
The result? Chaos. And it’s poised to affect global security.
