Murder in Turkey sparks outrage over rising violence against women (The Guardian)

If you wondering why women are posting black-and-white picture of themselves tagged #challengeaccepted #womensupportingwomen, you’re not alone.
Apparently these black and white challenges have been a thing since 2016 for a variety of causes. But it’s picked up steam again recently because of what’s happening in Turkey.
The murder of Pinar Gultekin sparked protests in the country against femicide. Turkey has a shockingly high rate, and the challenge had included the hashtags #kadınaşiddetehayır #istanbulsözleşmesiyaşatır (loosely translated, they read ‘say no to violence against women’ and ‘enforce the Istanbul Treaty/Doctrine'). H/t to Tariro Mzezewa for shining light on these details.
If you posted your own black and white selfie, I hope you consider adding the original hashtags to your post to help raise awareness around this horrific issue.
