Loved the Shonda Rimes piece! On the same theme, I started reading Hustle and Float as per your recommendation Hitha and I feel so seen and feel like it’s helping me think through how not to girl boss my way into burnout this year
I disagree with the assessment about the Georgia voting laws, just because Democrats did well in the 2021 municipal elections following their passing doesn’t mean they aren’t still voter suppression laws. And these laws also makes it easier for state officials to take over local elections boards, which could potentially lead to election subversion. Just because election subversion is the new concern, does not mean we need to lose sight of voter suppression. Yes, I am thankful Gov. Kemp did the right thing and does not spread the Big Lie, but we still need to be critical of and fight voter suppression laws for the good of our democracy.
On a side note, I volunteered to text voters for Fair Fight ahead of the 2020 senate runoff elections and during the training, it was eye opening to see how much more confusing and restrictive voting laws were in Georgia than in my home state of Colorado, where elections have been all mail in voting for years with plenty of dropboxes and in person polling places if people want to vote in person. IMO all states should make it as easy to vote as Colorado does. :)
Georgian here, and I agree with you. The results of the 2021 municipal elections were due to massive organizing efforts that succeeded in spite of Kemp's voter suppression laws. Kemp saying that he "didn't hear about suppression" directly contradicts the experiences of many voters.
The Axios interview sounds like Kemp is trying to walk a careful line to get as much support as possible ahead of the 2022 gubernatorial. He knows he can't win the Trump supporters in a primary against Purdue, but he's trying not to lose their support in a general election. I expect if he wins the primary and runs against Stacey Abrams in the general, we can expect to see the same racist, sexist vitriol from his camp that we saw in 2018.
As for certifying the election results, Kemp said himself that he "followed the law" in accordance with the constitution, which is the absolute minimum we should expect from our leaders, not something that warrants praise.

I'm so glad you're reading Rahaf's book!
Kemp is 100% pandering for votes because he’s being primaried. He’s a threat to democracy.
