I live in Sweden and the candle thing is true: in library cafes, and swanky wine-bars, everywhere has candles. We don't close our curtains either (we have excellent triple glazing!) - the idea is to provide light for those outside in the dark. And on Dec 13th, we celebrate St Lucia, patron saint of light when roadside candles burn all day to light us through the dark. Now you know why Ikea sells so many candles!
